Lisa’s Sisterlocks Video Reveals Benefits of Parting, Grooming and Retightening Techniques - 600 Locs On One Head!

Let me introduce you to “Lisa”. Lisa has been a client of mine for the past 7 months. I first met Lisa at one of my natural hair seminars that she attended with her aunt. Although her aunt immediately became one of my loyal and appreciated clients, Lisa however, waited to begin her lock journey for 2 more years! So I knew she was ready when she came to me for her Sisterlocks. Lisa’s hair texture was very soft, wavy, and dense, and it produced a head full of endless beautiful natural coils. It was 3-4 inches on top and almost 3 inches on the sides and back.
Lisa is one of those “perfect clients”. She was very dilligent with her hair care in between retightening sessions. We had one set back though. During a shampoo, she accidentally grabbed a moisturing shampoo and most of her locks became extremely loose and many unraveled completely. What normally would’ve taken me 3 hours to complete her grooming, took me almost 6 hours!
Because of the softness and looser curl pattern of Lisa’s natural texture, she was on a “shorter” re-tightening schedule until her locks settled. She’s currently on a 4 week schedule and the goal is 6 weeks.
Although 7 months has passed, Lisa’s hair has not begun to lock yet. They are more settled though, and make for a great transitional style while waiting for her hair to lock. I don’t encourage any additional styling or manipulation. This is hair that you can just tousle and go! Lisa absolutely loves her Sisterlocks and cares for them meticulously in between her visits with me…and it shows!
This was a spur of the minute video. Lisa is one of those clients that I thought would never be open to sharing on video. I asked, and to my surprise, she said, yes! The lighting wasn’t all that great and the video has an orange hue, but the the content is amazing! I have a question, I just recieved sisterlocks yesterday my hair is partially processed rand partially not meaning I have not had a perm in 4 months. the person who did my locks say no washing no oilin n nothing for six weeks come back for a tightnening. My hair doesn’t resemble a lock at all. I als have color in my hair is no oil or water even safe or hygenic

Hi Naineka. It sounds like your locktician could have given you a more thorough consultation so that you would have a better understanding of your process and what (and what not) to expect. I always find out how often my clients shampooed before getting locks and try to keep them on the same schedule. You know when you need to wash your hair. However, depending on the texture and especially if the hair is of a silkier or smoother texture, then I would give instructions on “scalp cleansing” between retightenings. What that is essentially is cleansing the scalp without submersing the head under water. I also moisturize and oil the scalp after the initial installation, but very lightly. My clients are instructed to lightly mist when their hair feels dry and then to follow up with a light oil or butter. Don’t be afraid to ask your locktician questions. Your locks will need added moisture and conditioning because of the color and 6 weeks may be too long for you without water or oil.

I love her hair. I love the thickness of it. I just got my hair locked yesterday, I had it in small braids so what the guy who locked it did was comb loc the braids and tied small knots on the ends. It doesn’t look like braids anymore but I really don’t like the knots. They’re not big or anything, they’re just above where my perm ends although he did put two knots on some of my twists and the second on is up kind of high. I didn’t think I could get them out but my hair is very soft and a bit silky so they actually came out rather easy. I have to admit I did remove a few of the knots he put up high on my twists.
He said it was sister locking. Do you put knots in sister locs? Could you let me know because if you don’t I think I’m going to take them out. I also love all the parts you put in. Man do I wish you were closer because I would have my hair done by you.

Hi JaMina. Although your hair will lock over time, I am not familiar with the “knots”. I’m sure that this is probably a technique that he uses, although I’ve never had to put knots in twists to assist in locking the hair. Many people who do locks really have a hard time with clients that have the softer/smoother hair texture. Oh, and by the way, you definitely do not have Sisterlocks. I would suggest you start asking specific questions if you don’t feel that your locking is progressing in a way that makes sense to you. Have a great hair day, JaMina, and thanks for posting.

I have locks that are salt n pepper..afer two years they are past my shoulders….have trouble with styling..do you hav any suggestions ..they do feel very dry.

Phyllis Says: Hi Karen. Yes. Check out a couple of my first videos on this site (I’m wearing an orange shirt). They should give you a few ideas. Also…if your hair feels dry. It IS dry. The Healthylocks Conditioning Mist followed by a light oil or butter will do wonders for your thirsty locks.
Hi my name is Shelita.You are a very GREAT! locktician.I started my locks like in August,2007.And Today is July 16,2008.I just washed my hair on yesterday.After that I twisted back with hairpins.My mom also has locks.Amd she had hers for like 2 years.But hers is very long now.But my naturalbility is locks and I love lock.Its so natural.And Thats why I luv it so much.My opinion is Everyone should have locks.My mom does my hair.She put flat twistest in my hair.Somtime I get flat twistet to the side and somtimes back.But I live I Danville,Virginia.

where can i get those grooming products you used on lisa’s locks’. i was one with you as you were explaining the grooming. i am as meticulous about sectioning, parting and straight lines. i truly enjoyed the video.

I love your video and it is confirming my decision on locking my hair. I previously had locks for about 6 years and then I decided on another hair style. I do have a question about maintainance once I get the sister locks. After the first twisting how often should your get the new growth retwisted. And do you retwist the all of the locks over with them being so small.

Hi, I love your videos, especially the stying ones. I just got what I hope is sisterlocks ($$$). My consultant used the sister lock tool but but I don’t think the parting took in consideration the density of my hair. He tried to maintain the same part size throughout my hair. So at the nape where I have thinner and less dense hair, I have small sister locks as you move toward my forehead the locks get larger because the hair in center of my hair is thick and dense (small - medium - large - large dense - large - medium and back to small around the face). Doing it in this manner produced less locks (way less than 400). Should I go back and have him split the large or large dense locks? (what I mean by large dense is that if I squeeze them there is little or no give, the other sizes have give).

I love your work and have been strongly sold on getting sisterlocks. I love the work you have done and want my hair to resemble Lisa’s hair. I am in a city where there is only one sisterloctician. I went to get a consultation, but for some reason I am not feeling 100%. First it was suggested that my 7-71/2 be cut down to 4. I had some split ends on my natural hair, so I didn’t mind, but I would have liked to stay at around 5; then I was told that my loc size would be medium in the back and large at the top, she didn’t like to do the small, because it takes a long time to retighten. I was never asked how I wanted my hair to look, how many locs, or shown how my hair might look. I saw a brief retightening of another of her clients and the parting was not very neat. The big thing is that this person is not 100% satisfied with the way their locs look and neither am I; I don’t since the same pride that you have with your hair and work. I am willing to travel to other locticians, if necessary. This is permenant decision that I am making and I want to be satisified. Plus, I live in a city where a lot of the African-Americans here have never heard of sisterlocs and i will be there first example. I am eager to get my sisterlocs started and my appointment is a week away, what do you suggest?
