hi, i have a question. im starting dreads but im starting them with the two strand twist, but because my hair is damaged it looks pretty thin. I’ve been thinking about getting those yarn braids to create a locked look while i wait for them to lock, do you think this is a good way to start them?
Hi Mrs Taylor. Thanks for your post. I would really caution you to start your locks with anything artificial in your hair, unless you plan to cut the part with the yarn off as your new healthy hair grows in. The added weight of the yarn especially when wet will tend to stretch your locks since your hair is thin. You didn’t eplain what has caused your damaged hair (perm, weaves, color, medication,etc.). The great thing about growing locks is that you will be growing very healthy hair, so even if it is damaged now, healthy hair will be growing in. Also, starting your hair with the two strand twist instead of the coils will produce locks that will have the twist pattern on the ends. So your locks, as they grow in, will have two textures going on. You may think your hair is thin because when we first start our locks, they look thin. As the months go on, however, your locks will expand and take on a fuller appearance, especially after your first shampoo. You can see what I’m talking about very well in the “Lock Popping” videos. Tiarra’s unlocked twisted hair near the scalp appears to be very thin, but as the hair goes through it’s locking process, it will expand and appear thicker and fuller.
thank you so much, well i thought my hair was damaged but it could be what you said, just thin looking because they’re just starting. it was pretty damaged before from perms and coloring, thats why i started to grow it out. i’ve been growning my hair natural for almost 3yrs now and finally decided to do some locs. im just not very familiar with them. i know you talk about sister locs, is there a difference between sister locs and locs.(it may sound like a stupid question, but i really dont know) my hair is not exactly super kinky either so i dont even know how my locs are going to turn out. lol, but i thank you very much for your advise.

Thank you sooooo very much for sharing your knowledge. I love the coils and the bounce of the spring locks. I recently purchased another technique to produce that look. It was a bit expensive and the tips of the tools had to be super glued in place before I could even use the product! I look forward to following your gracious lead. You and your locks are truly beautiful.

i love what you re doing i was ready to cut my sisiter locks until i ran across your video if i may make a suggestion, could you show how to put the spring locks in from the frist step?:
What did you use to achieve that look (spring locks). I LOVE IT…. I have been on this “wearing my locks kinda curly” look for about 3 mos now I would love to know what you used? I dont have SL’s I started mine with braids (small ones) and I use the latchhooking technique for maintenance…. Do tell. In vid 1 it looked like you had your locs set on something? Was it a loc loop? I just recently bought some ( 4 packs) and I LOVE THEM!

My name is Mandy I´m from London, I have had my hair in locks twice now, once I cut them off, the secone time I very patiently took them out! I have been wearing my hair naturally now for about 2 years, I occasionaly straighten it with the Ceramic Straightners and wear them in twists anyway to cut a long story short my hair is getting on my nerves and is dry & brittle so yep, I´m thinking of locking yet again (third time lucky?) and seeing yours has really inspired me, they´re so beautiful
The thing is, I live in Barcelona Spain and there are no black hairdressers. Is starting locks with the two strand twist method o.k? ( when I had my hair locked before I went to a hairdresser) Coiling looks difficult for me to do alone. I guess I can just wash my hair and twist as I always do and just never take them out right?
Any tips would be appreciated

Phyllis Says: Hi Mandy. Although I prefer starting locks with the comb coiling method (produces a tighter initial coil for locking), the two strand twist will eventuall lock as well. You’ll notice though, as your locks begin to go through its stages, the twists will really swell and expand. Another alternative would be to plait your sections instead of twisting them. This will keep your hair together better, especially if you have a softer/silkier texture. You will be able to immediately style your hair with the plaits (like flat twisting, cornrowing and curling them on perm rods, etc.) As your new growth comes in, just retwist as usual and there is no need to take them out if you are locking.
