I’m sure you’re curious about what Tiarra’s hair looked like when I first started her locks… well, here are a few photos. Her entire process will be documented in an Ebook that I’m currentlhy working on and she is currently one of the models that will be featured in my instructional DVD. I’m new to all of this video, websites, YouTube and blogging stuff (just since Oct ’07). But, as you will realize, I am a quick study. I’m getting SL’d in a couple of weeks and I’m already a fan of Phyllis, the Video Loctician! I know I won’t be able to use ANY products for a while, but you have such a passion for what you do (an such gorgeous locks), that I eagerly await your DVD and next video just for the inspiration!
I was absolutely blown away by your videos. They are so very detailed. Do you perhaps have any videos/advice on how to take down locks?
Hi Streeter, actually I have a video of me taking out traditional locks that were 3 years old. I will probably put that on the instructional video. I videoed it about 5 years ago in anticipation of all of this.
How long does my hair have to be before I can get it SLed? I have the same texture as Tiarra, but a little shorter length right now. Have only been natural about 2 months, so I have about an inch of new growth and a teeny Afro. Don’t want to go back to the chemicals– or even a press– but I’m starting to freak out about what to do with my hair until it grows. Love your videos! Found you on YouTube, and have now saved this page to my favorites. Seeing what you’re able to do gives me great encouragement. Your SLs are lovely!
Hey Dani. Congratulations on your decision to come back to natural! Gurl…stop “freaking” and enjoy your teeny afro. You need about 4 inches of new growth. An experienced Sisterlock consultant will be able to start with 3″. The hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month, so you’re looking at about 5/6 months before you can start Sisterlocks. Keep it clean, conditioned, massage your scalp regularly to increase the blood flow to your hair folicles and start taking a good multi vitamin. This will get your hair in the best possible condition and get your locking process off to a fantastic start. Have a great hair day.
P.S. If your hair texture is anything like Tiarra’s, you’re going to have incredibly beautiful Sisterlocks! I’m happy for you.

I need these videos! I have incredibly course, thick, and dry hair. Before my locs if my hair got wet and dried on it’s own it would turn into this massive ball of “lord have mercy” so naturally I am afraid to wash my hair on my own with out going to my loctician, which means (pleas don’t gag) that my hair only gets washed once every 2-3 months (eeww) it never stinks or anything, but I really want to wash my hair more often, and I need your videos to show me what to do with my big hair ball after it’s washed. For those who don’t have back to mother land hair you may not understand the situation, but just pray for me and my hair that we’ll continue to make it through.
P.S. Whats the diffrence between traditional locs and sister locs?
hey Phyllis, whats poppin? i just seen a few of your videos on youtube and joined your site. currently i, 2 weeks ago, i had a hairdresser put single braids in my head because she said my hair was too soft to start off with normal twists. my question is, is that a correct method to use when starting dread lock? Response for ROBYN: Hey Robyn. I love emails like this one and I would probably salivate if I every got my hands in your hair. I love a good challenge. And yes, I’m GAGGING. I don’t know if you’re adding product and retwisting in between visits to your locktician, but if you are, you’re setting yourself up for build up in your locks. And you’re waiting way too long between shampoos. If you haven’t already, start incorporating “Scalp Cleansing”. There are a few products that you will find in your local beauty supply stores designed for this. These proucts, however, are mostly alochol and very drying to your scalp and hair closest to your scalp. It’s very very important that after a scalp cleansing with these type products, you must add moisture to the scalp and lightly oil it as well. My technique for a good scalp cleansing and effective cleansing solutions will be covered in the instructional videos. Robyn, the difference between Sisterlocks and Traditional locks is this: Sisterlocks is a locking technique that uses a proprietary “tool” that helps to loop and interweave the hair to hold it in place as the natural locking process occurs. No products are used. Just your own natural hair. The Sisterlocks are characterised by small refined locks. Traditioanl locks are locks that have been started by twisting or coiling the hair and some type of gel/pomade is used to help temporarily “hold” the the hair in place. The locks are usually maintained by a palm rolling technique. They are also larger than Sisterlocks. Stay tuned for the videos. They will be very informational.
A response for GHANACHILD: Hi Ghanachild. Oh there’s always something “poppin” and thanks for joining this site. I’ve started locks in very soft, fine, thinning hair and my preference has always been the coiling technique with a barber’s comb. In every instance the hair has locked fine. It may have taken a little longer to do so, though. Some of these alternative techniques have come from innovative people who desire to make it an easier process for themselves and/or for their clients. Sometimes softer/straighter hair takes longer to lock and just appears more looser and more unkempt than the average person who has good ol’ nappy hair. So the answer to your question on how your locks were started is…it’s just another method for locking the hair; not correct or incorrect. Now that it’s plaited, your locktician will probably maintain it by palm rolling the new growth or pulling it through with a latch hook or crochet hook (or something similar). Phyllis Says: Hi Joann. for the last 6 -7 years, I’ve only ever used the products that you see in the videos. I’ve recently replaced the Warm Spirit products with the Soul Purpose product line. Nadine Thompson, a sister friend and an incredible business woman, developed the products for both companies. My locks snap back like that because of the twisting technique that I use and the great condition that my hair is in. You can get the products right here on this site.

Phyllis Says: Hi Wanda. Yes, I guess there are a handfull of people who can add extensions to Sisterlocks. I can’t imagine though who would even want to go through all that added time and huge investment after getting your Sisterlocks in. Also you risk your Sisterlocks developing into the best locks that they can be. It’s my opinion that those who entertain the thought of putting extesions on their Sisterlocks aren’t really ready for them. I wouldn’t do it. Great question. Have a great hair day.
I really enjoyed your videos. After having locs for 3 1/2 years, sad, to say but i am still confused on the maintance. One reads and hear so many so many different information.
My hair is very fine and I do color it, which makes my hair very dry. I do maintain it myself but the retwiisting only lasts about 1 day. I can’t stand
the fuzziness around the edges. Any suggestions.

Phyllis Says: Hi Rosemary. Yes. Accept your beautiful fuzzy edges. Fuzzy edges or hairline is very characteristic of locked hair. Many times when we see beautiful locked styles in magazines we don’t realize that the “models” are touched up, the pictures are touched up and the hair has just been styled…so it always looks like every hair is in place. Learn to embrace your natural hair line. Many sisters have permanently damaged their edges and would rather have your perceived problem. But here is a tip: mist your hairline with water or the conditioning mist and put a touch of aloe vera gel mixed with one of the Soul Purpose balms and lightly twist the loose hair back into the locks around your hairline; put a clip at the base to secure and it; cover with a satin-like scarf over night. This will help to set your locks and your hairline will look very fresh. I would suggest doing this for special occasions in between your grooming sessions. Too much manipulation around your hair line will cause thinning and eventual breakage. Thanks for posting, Angela, and have a great hair day.
Hi! I’ve watched your videos, they’re so amazing and great!
I have my locks for 5 months now, and i have a straight hair when i started.
My greatest concern is how to maintain my locs by not having all the fuzz and tangles coming out in my locs. I do use the palm rolling technique and i also use a crochet hook but it won’t last for even a day, the fuzziness comes back!
What butter or wax do you use after making locs to keep it in? Does it also work for people with straight hair like me?
I really wanted to purchase your products but i dont know what fits for me. I wanted to send you at least a picture or even a video so that you can thoroughly assess my locs. I badly need something to help me maintain a good, clean and beautiful locs and I believe you’re the only person who can help me! =)

I got talked into locking my hair while on vacation in Georgia. This is all new to me but I am willing to give it a try.
I had my hair locked by using the comb method while in Georgia on June 6th, ’09 I live in a small town in Michigan and their are NO lockticians here. They still where weave hair where I live.
I saw your video’s on “Youtube” because I was looking for help. I am seeking advice on what to do next. I will have to try and maintain my locks myself and I am lost. Are there any video’s out there that can help teach me what I need to do????.

Denver here from Jamaica. I don’t have locls but have thought about it. Just can’t get around to do it. Anyway, I’m interested in being a loctician, but it is very expensive to do that here. Not much loctitians in my area, so I have an interest in being one. I am apparently grooming a few of my friends locks, which I was told that I am good. But I want to be good at what I do, plus learn the other techniques.
Any suggestions on a online course or if you offer instructinal videos or DVD’s I can get my hands on. I would be really appreciative for the tips. Love your work and YOUR HAIR!!!!

Hi Deejayjamgirl. I don’t know of any current online or DVD courses that specifically deal with how to become a locktician, however, there are a handful of individuals who conduct their own workshops, courses and classes (just like I do).
